Area code 646 is a New York City telephone area code for the borough of Manhattan, created July 1, 1999, due to the near exhaustion of the 212 and 917 area codes.

Intended for use primarily as an area code for mobile devices, 646 also has been assigned to landlines.

Cultural references

On the Seinfeld episode "The Maid", Elaine is upset when she is given a 646 number. She loses a prospective boyfriend when the man doesn't want to have to dial 1-646 before every call.
